Kidnapped

Dallas
Season 1 Episode 18
Air Date:  December 17, 1978 (1978-12-17)

ReaRecap:  At breakfast, Bobby tells the family that he hopes that Pam doesn’t start working nights, since she’s been out of the house before breakfast.  Sue Ellen got a letter from her mother, and she tells them that she plans on coming out for a visit.  JR tells her she can’t stay there.  There is a strange guy watching the house, as they all go off for the day.
In a motel room, three people are planning on kidnapping JR, they have pictures of everyone and everyone’s cars.  They are going to make their move soon.
Bobby has to meet with an architect, when he gets to his car he finds that it has a flat tire, he goes back to the office and tells the secretaries that he is going to take JR’s car, they will have the flat fixed before JR gets back from his meeting so he can take Bobby’s car home.
JR is at the hotel, but he’s not at the meeting he told them he would be at, he’s with his latest girlfriend, who complains that she never gets to see him anymore.  He agrees to stay awhile longer, even though his next appointment will be waiting for him at the office.
The kidnappers follow Bobby, to me it looks like Bobby knows that he’s being followed so I’m not sure why he pulled off to a deserted road.  They pull guns on him, and they realize that they have the wrong Ewing, but they take him anyway.  They take him to what looks like a crack house, and they chain him to a bed.
They take his wallet and leave.  They have done this before, but they killed the last person they kidnapped.
JR returns to the office and they tell him that Bobby hasn’t arrived at the construction site yet and that he left an hour ago.
The kidnappers decide that they will use Cliff as a go-between.  They bring Bobby out of the room and tell him that they are going to take his picture and have him write a letter to Pam.
Cliff gets a phone call, it’s from the kidnappers, they tell him he’s got to tell the family and the first set of instructions are buried near the ranch.
The family is waiting for Bobby to come home for dinner, Pam comes in having seen his car asks where he is.  JR tells them that Bobby took his car.  As Miss Ellie takes a phone call there is a knock at the door.  Cliff comes in telling them that he’s here to see Jock.  Miss Ellie tells them that they found JR’s car abandoned, and Cliff tells them he got the call from the kidnappers, and shows them the note he found.  JR wants to call the FBI, even though they told them not to call the police or the FBI, but Pam tells him that they need to do what the kidnappers told them.  Miss Ellie tells Jock that she’s right, so Cliff will follow the directions and bring the money to the kidnappers.
At bank the next day Cliff asks JR why he called the FBI, he tells Cliff that they know what is best for Bobby.  Outside they are being watched by one of the kidnappers.
JR goes to Ray, telling him that they need to put aside their differences till they get Bobby back, he wants Ray to get a bunch of ranch hands together that are good shots, he’ll tell him more when it’s time.
The kidnappers call Cliff and ask who the guy at the bank was, they know that they called the FBI, and tell to get rid of them and follow the next set of instructions, and if they don’t Bobby will be dead.
Cliff gets to the bar and finds out where he needs to go next and a photo of Bobby.  He goes to a park and gets the next note, which tells him to go to the train tracks.  When he gets there, there is nothing there but another note.  He takes it and returns to Southfork.  He shows them the note from Bobby, the photo and his wallet which were in the envelope.
One of the kidnappers tells the other two that he thought the FBI was following Cliff.  The other man and the woman want to kill Bobby and get out of town.  He tells them that there will be no killing.  They hear a noise from the room where they are keeping Bobby, and find him escaping.  Later the lady come in and takes the plate of food from Bobby, she tells him about how she would do anything for money, he tells her that he’ll give a lot of money if she lets him go, she gets mad saying she wouldn’t ditch the other two, and climbs on him kissing him.  She stops when she’s called to the other room.
Cliff gets another call, he wants to talk to Bobby, but the caller tells him no.  They make an agreement to swap Bobby and the money the next morning.  JR leaves the room, telling them he’s got something to take care of.
Jock is with JR and Ray with the ranch hands, they all get getting their guns loaded and ready.  JR tells them what they need to do.
Jock tells Cliff that it’s time to go and gives him the suitcase of money, Pam said to take care of himself and Bobby.  Miss Ellie tells him that they all will be grateful to him forever if he brings Bobby home alive and well.
At the field, Cliff is waiting by the car, he doesn’t see the guys hiding in the field.  The kidnappers pull up and make Cliff bring the money forward before pulling Bobby from the car.  He makes Cliff open the suitcase, and then pushes Bobby forward towards Cliff’s car, Cliff has to wait a bit, and then is told to go back to the car.  As the kidnapper takes the money JR calls out and they all begin to fire.  Bobby pulls Cliff down, and they stay till the shooting is over.  Both men kidnappers are hit, the woman gets out of the car, and rushes to the side of her boyfriend, one of the ranch hands takes her gun.  Cliff goes at JR, accusing him of almost getting them shot, and JR tells him that they were out of shot, but Cliff doesn’t believe him.
At the ranch Pam tells Bobby how worried she was, Pam asks JR about Cliff almost getting killed, and he tells her that he was never safer.
Final Thought:  Pretty good stand alone episode, it was interesting to see the families have to work together.  I think that this would have been as stronger episode if they had set up the kidnapping earlier and maybe made it a two-parter, getting more backstory of the kidnappers would have been better.
Best Outfit:  The jacket it huge on this lady.
Fight Count: 0
